My work has brought me to Nagoya, Japan for a long period. Nagoya is the third or the fourth largest city in Japan depending upon whether you consider Yokohama a suburb of Tokyo or not respectively. It is quite lively and one of the most fashionable cities in Japan. The transportation system is believed to be one of the best in Japan, if not the best. Which, by the way, explains the lack of traffic jams that Tokyo is so notorious for. The Sub-way system has 6 lines that criss-cross each other at various points and makes commuting really pleasurable. In addition, the JR (Japan Rail) lines run on the ground connecting Nagoya to nearby cities. If that is not enough already, then private railways like the Meitetsu and Kintetsu take their trains into places that are left uncovered by the JR. Finally, who hasn't heard of the 'Shinkansen' (Bullet Train) that does an amazing 300 kph to reach Tokyo (a little over 300 km from Nagoya) in about an hour. I take the JR tokaido line every day to Kariya which is about 20 km from Nagoya. The 'Special Rapid' manages to cover this distance in about 20 mins.
Cut to Bangalore. It takes about 1.5 hrs to cover the same distance to electronic city from Banashankari by company owned buses. There has been a lot of hue and cry over infrastructure recently. It has got some things moving. But, who's talking 'Public transportation'? One, Mr. Deve Gowda, and for all the wrong reasons. Improving the quality of roads is one step forward, but in no way is a long term solution. Efficient Public transportation is the need of the hour. We need to take the innumerable 2 and 4 wheelers used as private transport vehicles off the roads. These are the ones that choke the roads and make commuting a misery. The only way to do that is to ensure there is a good alternative in the form of public transportation. This would serve 2 purposes. One, take the load off the roads which will make maintenance less demanding, and two, enable enforce traffic discipline which we seem to lack so much.
Rather than endlessly discussing which means of public transportation is better, it is better to get down to work. In the long term we would definitely be needing a combination of these various kinds of transportation depending on various factors.
It would definitely help in improviding productivity if the employee thinks about how to solve that problem at work rather than how to get to work!
Thats my thought for today. Care a penny for my thoughts?
